Village country, and what it asks of a mover
North of the city the strip narrows to a ribbon of beach villages threaded along Lawrence Hargrave Drive: Stanwell Park in its amphitheatre, Coledale where barely one address in fifteen is a unit, Austinmer and Thirroul with their weatherboards and lead-light doors, then Bulli, Woonona and Corrimal easing back into suburb. Up on the plateau, Helensburgh minds its own business with big blocks and an easy M1 run, about 31 minutes from the CBD.
These are house suburbs, and old ones. The streets came before the trucks, which means the first planning question is never "how many boxes", it is "what can your street actually take". We run smaller trucks into the tight lanes and shuttle to a bigger one when the maths says so, rather than wedging a 12-tonner where it does not belong.
The wet side of the mountain
The escarpment makes its own weather, and the numbers say so: Thirroul's long-run average is about 1,355 mm of rain a year against roughly 1,185 mm in central Wollongong. So we treat rain as normal work up here, not an emergency: tarped staging at the door, covered trolley runs, mattresses and fabric pieces wrapped before they see sky. Our wet-day guide has the whole drill.
Northern moves we plan for
- Village to village. Thirroul to Austinmer is minutes, and short moves reward tight sequencing: one lap, no dead time.
- Sydney escapees landing north. Half of Thirroul seems to have arrived this way. We do the corridor run weekly, 84 km CBD to CBD, and the village end with a village-sized truck.
- Character homes with character access. Steep drives at Stanwell Park, stairs cut into hillsides at Coledale, verandas that want every piece carried square. Slower per metre, and worth it.
- Growing out of the cottage. The classic northern move: two-bedder in the village to a bigger place in Woonona or Corrimal, ten minutes down the strip.
Local fact worth planning around: Lawrence Hargrave Drive is the only road through the far northern villages, so a morning start beats the afternoon beach traffic at Stanwell Park and Coledale by a comfortable margin in summer.
